Domain Name
These days there is a lot of fuss about domain names. When two celebs marry and have a kid the newspapers start speculating about what will be the name of the website they are going to create and dedicate for their child. So start thinking it must be something related to websites and celebs and which only celebs are able to posses.
But then while browsing through different sites, you come to know that it is not only the celebs but any common man like you and I can own a domain name. But what exactly is a domain name? I searched the web for about a week to understand something about it.
Technically speaking, in its most commonly used meaning, a domain name is a name that identifies a computer or a network of computers over the internet. The domain name will be a part of the website's url.
For example if I own a site with URL (Uniform Resource Locator) of
URL : http://www.abcd.com/index.html
Then the domain name will be
Domain Name : www.abcd.com
So why is all the fuss about domain names? I shall tell you soon. Please read on.
Now you for some purpose decide on begin a website. You go to a webhost company to apply for webspace. They will ask you if already have a domain name or not? Since this is your first website you will not be already owning a domain name. Now the problem starts. What is a domain name? Where to get one?
Now just imagine you create a folder in your computer. Now you have to name it. If that particular folder has pictures of a lion chasing some deer in a plane in Africa. What will you name that folder? Will you name the folder "Aeroplane pics". Definitely not, right?
This is the same case with your website. If you are going to open a website and intend to share Wildlife pictures in it, then naming the website as www.tomatosauce.com will not be of any use to you or any visitors. They will definitely forget the name of the website. Neither will it help search engines which give the name of the website a great deal of importance.
Consider a person searches for the query "How to make good tomato sauce" and because your website has this name, it will come up in the first few pages of the search engine result. And when the innocent user clicks on that link your website will the glorious picture of the lion chasing the deer in an African plane will come up while the user wants to make tomato sauce. That will not be healthy either for you or the user. Your website will lose popularity soon.
So the main thing about domain names is that it should be consistent with what your website presents. If they match perfectly your website will sky rocket. That is why there is a lot of fuss about getting the domain name right.
But now internet is used by many millions of people and there are as many websites in it. Since those who started those websites created them many years or months or days before you they could get better domain names than yourself. Now comes another important fact. No two websites can have exactly the same domain name.
So if in our example we would like a domain name wildlifepics.com there is a possiblilty that it is already owned by another person. You will have to either buy it from him or choose some other domain name. That is why there are so many extensions like .net .com .info .org .co.in .gov etc. Therefore you can choose the same domain name with a different extension ie wildlifepics.net or wildlifepics.info or so on.
Now you might understand why people are speculating on what the name of the celebs kid will be. It is so absurdly simple. If two celebs Jumboman and Mumbowomen marry, there is a chance that the chiled is named JumboMumbo. Since it is a fashion nowadays for celebs to start a new website when a new child is born and naturally they would like domain names the same as their kids name, it gives others oppurtunity to make good money. Didn't quite understand what it has to do with earning money, right? Well then continue to read on.
Assuming our celebs Jumboman and Mumbowomen indeed name their child Jumbomumbo, and a shrewd person like you or me already buys all the domains like jumbomumbo.com jumbomumbo.net etc (It will not cost more that a few 100 dollars) The celebs will be forced to abandon this domain name or buy it from us. Since they are celebs and assumed to be filthy rich they will decide to get the domain from you. What you will do is charge $10000 for the domain name. Believe me they will pay you that money for their kid's sake. Just a little bit brain and make $9500 profit.

Remember in domain name buying and selling, time is very very important. You might come across a great domain name but because of laziness think or buying it afte a few hours. But I can assure you if you look at the same name after a few hours, it would have already been sold and the other person will be making the huge profit which you should have made, had you not postponed the buying of the domain name.
